For Sir Hilton Poynton's signature.

Dear Mr. Governor,

18-3-50

Thank you for your letter of

24th February about the Economic Adviser to the

Governor of Hong Kong. Since receiving it

we have heard from Hong Kong that the Governor

has now found someone whom he considers

suitably qualified to fill the post and has

appointed him as head of the Department of

Commerce and Industry, in which post

he would also act as Economic Adviser; so

I fear that on this matter we have troubled you

for nothing.

If, however, you should have in mind

the names of any people whom you would consider

suitable for the type of post concerned we

should be most grateful to learn of them since,

as I mentioned in my earlier letter, this

type of appointment is a fairly recent

development and one which is likely to spread

in the future. We should therefore be glad

to have a few names in reserve should we be

asked to fill similar vacancies in other

colonies in the future.
